The Seal GOLLI Returns to the Wild
Golli, a motherless grey seal pup which was rescued in east Iceland in November and has been cared for at the Museum of Natural History in the Westman Islands since, was released back into the wild on Saturday. Georg Skaeringsson, Golli’s caretaker, told ruv.is that he had been waiting for the right conditions, favorable weather and tides, as was the case on Saturday. A group of people came to bid Golli farewell at Klaufin by Stórhöfdi. The seal pup didn’t mind the people but progressed down the beach. At first it seemed scared of the surf and retreated. But then it swam further and further into the ocean until it disappeared. Skaeringsson said it had been difficult to say goodbye to Golli, which had become like a pet to him. However, he expects the seal to stay in the area where it was released for the next few days.
